Hello,
In June 2019, my laptop and all electronic equipment in my home, was taken by the police, who were/are investigating a crime against someone who was living in my home. This is not in anyway connected to me, I am not and never was under suspicion, but because that person could have had access to my equipment, (which he didn’t by the way), my laptop and iPad was taken too. I was told it would take several months for them to be inspected and returned, but it’s now a year on and I’m no closer to getting my stuff back. I have good home insurance, and I was just wondering whether I could claim for a replacement laptop. Having been a year without one, and going through lockdown and many other stressful issues, I could really do with a screen bigger than my phone, which is giving me headaches.

thank you in advance.

Would not think any home insurance policy would reimburse you for goods seized by the police and held by them on your behalf, pending investigations.

You will get them back eventually.

No, the police haven't stolen them.
Buy a tablet, they are quite cheap and bigger than a phone screen.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

An insurance policy will cover you for the specific risks stated in the policy - you need to read your policy document.

But lawful seizure by the police is very unlikely to be one of the risks covered. A typical set of insured risks might be:

    • Fire or smoke
    • Explosion, lightning or earthquake.
    • Riots, civil commotion, labour and political disturbances or strikes.
    • Malicious damage or vandalism.
    • Impact by any vehicle, train, animal, aircraft
    • Flood
    • Storm
    • Escape of water
    • Theft or attempted theft
    • and maybe accidental damage
