That's just marketing-speak. 
I don't believe for a second that their goal was an altruistic aim of getting people saving. 
This is Goldman-Sachs, a tough and not entirely squeaky-clean multinational investment bank and financial services company (see e.g their £34.4 million fine - just last year in the UK - for misreporting millions of transactions).
Their goal, surely, was simply to build a big market share for their new savings bank by offering attractive rates on an easy-to-use platform.
And it worked.

I wasn't promoting them, I was replying to the question raised as to whether the 500,000 customers were added in recent months or in total since they started. As it states the number is since they started.in 2018.

To the point you raise, I agree. They are a great white shark in the sea of finance. They are not in any way an altruistic, whiter than white, think of the customer kind of company. I don't think I suggested otherwise.
Irrespective of that though I think they are a benchmark in how to run a simple savings account. Simple to open and operate, fast payments in and out with a competitive rate of interest. Other than offering standing orders like RCI Bank does I can't think of anything they got wrong.

Worryingly I cannot log onto my Marcus account.  I just get a message saying they are not taking on any new customers.  This shouldn't prevent current customers accessing their account.

Works for me but it will be down later. Cookies, cache, different browser etc

Just logged in no problem. 
They've not been taking new customers for a couple of weeks.
