Any new decent rewards cards on the horizon?

Seems like years ago the last "decent" credit card appeared. (decent by UK standards...)

Probably tandem cashback travel card. But now even that is gone. Is there anything decent on the horizon at all? Are the days of getting ANY rewards from MasterCard or visa just gone now in the UK?

Outside the EU reward cards are still very much a great thing for those who manage their finances well. But here (be that EU or UK however you currently name what we are) cards offerings are terrible. I was just hoping maybe someone had news of a new product coming maybe? Something exciting?

  • I don’t know of any. Most folks here seem to talk about Amex, BC Rewards or one of the supermarket/premium shop cards which give points.

I use the BA Amex card for as much as I can, the points soon rack up.

I guess you weren't happy with the comments on the other 3 threads where you've asked this very question already!!

    How do you define "decent"?
There is the option of applying for credit cards from other countries - though you may have to lay some ground work to become eligible.

They don't think that the Barclaycard rewards with 0.25% cashback one is decent from their previous threads so that's out.

    Short answer: no.

Rewards cards are not economically viable for most credit card companies since the EU capped interchange fees on credit cards at 0.3%. Amex is exempt from this cap, thus they can offer more generous rewards cards. I don't see the situation changing after Brexit since the main reason the cap was imposed was due to the large fees that merchants were forced to hand over to Mastercard and Visa duopoly.

From my limited knowledge of foreign cards that looks like they offer better rewards than UK ones, most charge either an annual or monthly fee - they don't look so attractive now!

Still attractive if the cards pay for themselves several times over!

If average monthly spend is around the £1k mark, there isn't much difference between a 0.25% and 0.5% cashback card. Sometimes it's the other benefits that bring the value - forex free if you travel abroad, insurance, offers and the like. All depends on what you want in a card, but certainly some attractive options out there!

I have a Barclaycard that is an ex Egg-Money card, that still pays 0.5% cashback.

Gets me about £100-150 a year on average and is my full balance pay off card.
