No Insurance and balance due 13 June with Jet2holidays

Hi everyone - I booked a package holiday for my wife and 3 daughters to the Algarve flying 26 July. I have only paid the deposit. I held back paying any more due to concerns with Brexit. Then Covid came along! This has caused me to completely forget about cancelling the holiday. I mistakenly misread the T&C thinking if that if I didn't pay anything towards the holiday by the due date, it would be cancelled. I have since found out that they have not cancelled and they have moved the 'due' date to 13 June when they will take the remaining balance! What options do I have?
Do I let them take the balance, and hope it get cancelled, and if it gets cancelled will Jet2 repay me or would I have to have claimed it back through insurance (which I haven't got)
Do I cancel - reading through T&C I would lose 50% of holiday cost.
Or would they offer me vouchers towards a future holiday.
The wife and daughters don't particularly won't to go - 2 of them work in social care homes, 1 is a trainee nurse and the other is a Midwife, so it's been a traumatic few months!

If Jet2 cancel your holiday then you will be owed a refund. You wouldnt have been able to claim for a cancellation through travel insurance anyway.0

Wait until the 12th, if they haven't cancelled, then don't pay the balance. You will lose your deposit. If you don't, you have to gamble on them cancelling. Only you can make that decision.
Not clear what you mean by 'take the balance': how did you pay? Do they hold your card details and take payment from that? If so, talk to your merchant to block that.
I have to ask: 5 of you going on holiday and 4 of you working in healthcare, but no travel insurance?
No free lunch, and no free laptop

I booked this last August (I'm not going BTW) with the intention of getting insurance a couple of months before they go.
Re card details - they said they will take the remaining balance from the card that paid the deposit. I did ask the bank (Halifax) if I could stop the payment and they said no!?0 -
You need to have travel insurance in place from the time of booking, not from the time of the holiday, it can't be used retrospectively.
You could cut up the card, report it damaged and ask them to reissue it? But it's your right to cancel a recurring debit authority on your card, so try to speak to someone at Halifax a bit further up the food chain. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Debit card. If I stop payment though would I be in breach if contract?

If only the OP had a time machine, then that would be a helpful comment.HarryDavies01 said:

Yes,of course. Whether they would pursue you for the balance due, or simply keep your deposit, no one can say.SummerSaturdays said:Debit card. If I stop payment though would I be in breach if contract?

Portugal is welcoming tourists, flights are resuming and it is reported that talks are going on to establish 'air bridges' to allow travel to certain countries from the end of June.
At present quarantine on arrival in the UK is in place.0
