HELP! Flight Cancelled & Can't Afford To Get Home!

I have been living in Mexico for the last year and a half and was due to move back to the UK in April. We were flying on TUI.nl from Cancun to Amsterdam (animals fly 'excess baggage' to mainland Europe, rather than cargo to UK, which literally saves thousands of pounds and hours of red-tape and paperwork nightmares).

Obviously, the flight was cancelled, and so I chose to wait it out here until the flights reopened as repatriating all of my pets was prohibitively expensive.

Flights have finally reopened from August - but the flight now costs 1264 Euros - three times the value of my 480 Euro voucher and I simply cannot afford it.  The small print just says I have to pay the difference but they oh-so-kindly won't charge me to change the flight!!  :s  From mid-September, the price goes back down to the range of my voucher but that is THREE more months away and I am desperate to get home to my family.

I've explored every avenue for other affordable routes and have come up with nothing. I contacted TUI Netherlands and they won't budge on the price, so I am literally stuck. It seems immoral since this was nobody's fault. By the way, TUI UK and TUI Belgium are not charging these astronomical figures, but neither of them will accept more than two pets per passenger,

Does anyone have any ideas, please?

  • Other than ask your family in UK to help you with payment I think you will just have to wait until the flights become more manageable for your requirements.    If your family are desperate to see you too they may help out but if not, 3 months isn't really that long in the grand scale of things (you being away for 18 months already).   Or (despite knowing how you feel about your pets) maybe you could temporarily rehome some of them (don't know how many) until you are in a position to fly them back?   Won't they have to go into quarantine coming from Mexico though?   That will cost a lot as well.   Sorry not much use but can't see any way round it.

As you already have taken the voucher I also can only see the two options that Tedber has mentioned.
