Lidl refund policy

Today I returned a faulty toy to Lidl a week after purchase. It didn't work. I haven't been taking receipts in shops because of Covid. They refused to refund me and said I had to contact customer services who would then issue me with a letter with a code to take back in to get the refund. They insisted their refund policy complies with regulations but it simply doesn't as a faulty item can be returned for repair, refund or replacement within 30 days. They sent me their refund policy and it only deals with refunds with a receipt. My question is this - how do Lidl get away with not complying?

Use self-serve - nobody touches the receipt except yourself.  Use a staffed till - get them to drop the receipt in your bag and you can leave it for as long as you leave the item.

They are not "not complying".  You haven't proved you bought the toy but they seem willing to refund you if you follow the procedure they have in place.

Can't offer you a solution other than following what they've said but I don't see the sense in not taking a receipt. Surely the person who is on the checkout is going to have handled all of your items when scanning them anyway.
  • Receipt is proof of purchase. Take receipt but just wash hands/gel hands without touching face etc & as mentioned checkout person touched goods anyway!

Did you pay by card or cash? Proof of purchase can also be proof of card payment which will usually show the company/recipient, the date and sometimes the time of purchase. If you can get a printout of your statement or print a screen shot from your card app that's usually acceptable. Once they have the proof with time and date the store can usually match your purchase to their records. I had to return something bought at Christmas time where the receipt was illegible and used a printout of my bank statement after blanking out the other pieces of irrelevant info. I was given a refund without any problem this way.
Check with customer service if you aren't sure.
