But our existing policy would have covered you until it expired- which you say was while you would have been  away.
     However according to Virgin FAQ

If you bought your annual multi-trip policy before 13 March, we’ll consider coronavirus (COVID-19) related claims for any trips booked before 13 March 2020.

For annual multi-trip policies, cancellation and curtailment cover does not usually start until the start date of the policy. However, we’ll consider coronavirus-related cancellation claims up to 48 hours prior to your planned departure date.

Unfortunately the existing policy was with another insurer and ended part way through the time I would have been away, my original comment was that VM insurance would not update medical records due to buying on a comparison site, they would only cancel and reissue and the new policy wouldn’t have included anything coronavirus related  ( this is still their stance), unfortunately when I bought my policy on the 5th March, the date was to start on the 14th ( my error) this was the day after VMI declared coronavirus a known event, not sure whether that was done retrospectively or not as I was only made aware of this a day or two ago, and was not informed on the 13th . I was never trying to claim on this flight, as I moved it to later in the year, I was, though, worried about other flights I had already booked for the year ahead, having to update medical records and finding out I couldn’t, so my insurance appears useless. Through the whole process of contacting VMI, I have literally spent hours on hold and been spoken to quite abruptly, but not once, until my most recent call did they highlight that I had made the error of starting on the 14th, just told me I would have to cancel and re apply,  they were so unhelpful and it took so long to get through, that I fear making a claim with them would be an absolute nightmare, so now I’m looking to change and hope they will give me a portion of my payment back as it’s certainly not been used, waiting to hear back in the next 5 days
    i won’t hold my breath
