is there anything we can do?Read the terms of the agreement very, very carefully. It is likely to have 2 key elements in it. The first is a "break" clause which allows the renter to pass back the property if something goes wrong (on either side). There will also be a dispute mechanism to find a way to resolve issues without going to court - though if there is no dispute mechanism, court is inferred.
These sorts of contract issues are nothing new. They've been here since time immemorial so check the wording there and not the wording here.
- All land is owned. If you are not on yours, you are on someone else's
- When on someone else's be it a road, a pavement, a right of way or a property there are rules. Don't assume there are none.
- "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere
