New Style JSA and Working

Hello
Because of the Covid 19 situation, I started claiming New Style JSA whilst looking for a job. I was entitled to this because I had paid sufficient Class 1 NICs in previous years as an employee.
I understand that you're able to work 16 hours per week if on this benefit, but my question is, am I allowed to work up to 16 hours on a self employed basis as a sole trader (ie doing a market stall at the weekend) while I look for work?
I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

Thanks

Yes, you are allowed to do up to 16h/week of work, any type of work including self employed. You will need to contact DWP each fortnight on your signing day to report your earnings for the last 2 weeks. If you have consistently worked for more than 16h/week or earned more than the equivalent of 16h x minimum wage then they will close your claim. If you just go over for one period and drop below the next period they will probably leave your claim open. Any earnings will be deducted pound for pound from your JSA benefit (there is a small disregard based on your circumstances).
Are you able to claim Universal Credit? As a part time worker, you would be better off on UC if you are able to claim it (savings/capital less than £16,000) as you get to keep more of your earnings on UC.

I believe that disregard is £5 and then deductions are made £1 for £1.

Before you consider applying for UC in place of New style JSA bear in mind as well as savings mentioned above any income from a partner will be taken into account and if you are in receipt of tax credits they will stop as soon as you apply for UC and you will not be able to claim them in the future if circumstance change; you would have to remain on UC.
