Refund morel dilemmas

I have been offered a refund on my football season ticket, and I am really struggling to know the right thing to do. Do i cash in or is it better left supporting my club. Will my gift support low income wage earners furloughed at the club, or will it sit in the bank? Will my decision help the economy in some small way because less or taken form the government
furlough scheme. The club have a millionaire owner should I factor this in. I do not necessarily need the money but it all helps right ?
Thoughts ?

It’s a decison you need to make. You haven’t been specific about the club, however the smaller the club, the more they are likely to be effected. The lower down the leagues you go, the more income from ticket sales is vital as they don’t get as much TV money.

You also need to think about your personal situation. Do you need the money back? is it going to help you out in anyway if you do get the money back?
  • Thanks for the response, I feel the club in questions is in a decent financial position, a wealthy owner, tier 2 so decent TV revenue. My dilemma is around how this may impact employees of the club, and in particular the lower wage earners, if it saves a job or goes towards this, this could help make my decision, or will it save the club dipping into the Gov Furlough scheme which hopefully help to reduce the impact in Income tax or other increases required to reduce this deficit from COVID-19 financial support schemes. I am not overly desperate to reclaim the cash, but i could put it to good use all the same.

Take the refund and donate to a local charity where you know the funds are needed.  If you leave it with the football club, your money may do some good or may just help a millionaire stay rich.
  • You have to think about what is right for you and your club. My club is in League 1, I have a season ticket for this season and also purchased one for next season at the beginning of March. The club have yet to announce what they will do, but I know there is a vote today on whether to end this season now or not. Once this has been decided, I guess correspondence will be sent out.

It is likely that there will be no fans at games until 2021, but you have to think about what is right for you. I have recently gone through redundancy consultation and 'survived', but even if I had been made redundant, I still think I would have not requested a refund purely to hopefully see my team survive this time and all those working to carry on. Match day income is vital for a club in League 1. Luckily we have pre sold around 4,000 in March for next season so hopefully this will help in the short term.

Sadly I still think it won't be too long before we start seeing football clubs especially in the lower leagues succumbing to the conditions.

Lets be 100% honest here - you taking the refund isn't going to mean the difference between redundancy and a job for someone. The club us a business and will be run as such, decisions will be made by management and the extra cash from your one ticket sitting in the account isn't going to make a difference to those decisions.

Certainly if everyone took a refund, it will make a difference. But what you do won't change what every other customer does, so don't make your decision on that basis. You could be the one person not taking a refund, and the staff could be made redundant anyway.

Just do what you think is right.
