Please someone help! After a mistake I made when I filed my husbands 2018/19 self assessment tax return ( I ticked that he was employed and self employed ,.when he was in fact only self employed ) . This is what has made us not eligible for the Seiss. We have lost a grant of approx 3 thousand pounds. Although I went online to amend his tax return , HMRC say that there is nothing they can do due to the amendment being made after March. So unfair , we really need that money and he is entitled to it but due to a silly mistake we cant have it. Could I appeal further or just give up 😪

Probably nothing you can do about SEISS - you are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of your tax return.
Have you considered BBLS?
Tax payment deferrals?
Do you have business premises and qualify for the grants?0 -
You can appeal but the decision won't change.

You must have done more than just tick a box, because if you ticked the employment box and put no details in it, that would affect nothing (and I would have expected the software to flag the lack of entries). It sounds more like you have put his self employed income in the employment income boxes? I think you should assume you will get nothing, but let us know precisely what was done incorrectly.paulinestanlie said:Please someone help! Opening this up would potentially open a floodgate for fraud - so while it's a tough pill to swallow, I understand why they've not allowed this to be amended.

This happened to my son as well . He was refused on review . As the Seiss. is being extended will they accept the amended tax returns for the next period

Unlikely, but they are expected to confirm the details on 12 June0 -
It would seem highly unlikely.itsonlyme1 said:This happened to my son as well . He was refused on review . As the Seiss. is being extended will they accept the amended tax returns for the next period
The Government were generous in allowing late-submitted tax returns to be considered. To consider changes after that date would just be opening up to fraud on a massive scale. Unlike the late submissions, which had to be done quick, people have now had a few months to think about exactly what they would have liked to have on their tax return to maximise the grant payment and some would take advantage accordingly if there was a re-opening of filed tax returns.0 -
I agree. I was surprised that they allowed late filing. Consider a husband and wife partnership normally sharing profits 50:50. Both have other income exceeding their profit share, so get no grant, because they filed on time. A husband and wife who didn't file on time alter profit shares to 1:99, so wife's SE income now exceeds her other income, and she gets a grant. How is that fair? I cannot believe they will allow late amendments now.Grumpy_chap said:

And it would create a massive dilemma if tax returns could be changed now for the second SEISS grant. Would the amended tax return also retrospectively make you eligible for the first SEISS grant?0

What about his other yearly tax returns?
Can you be more specific with what income you entered in what parts of the relevant tax years?0
