I bought an HP 1102 laser printer a couple of years ago, which obviously came with a toner cartridge, which has now run out ... only half the pape is printing.
Looking online I am quite shocked at the price of a genuine HP toner .. I'm pretty sure the cost is actually more than the price of the printer.
Previously I had an HP deskjet printer and always used Inkrite cartridges for many years without a problem, they were much cheaper than the HP cartridges.
I am therefore wondering is it OK to go for me to try out a compatible toner ..85A is the 'official HP number ref. if so, which compatible toner cartridges are good and are there any to avoid.
thank you

I always only ever bought original laser toners and they cost me a fortune. Having now got an Oki colour printer and the toners costing approx £80 per colour it costs more than the printer to refill all colours. Normally I would just buy the same printer again if all colours were coming to an end as its not only toners that go on laser printers but also the image drum and other parts. The last colour printer purchased only had 1 toner running really low so I went with a compatible toner and it's been brilliant but I have also had HP laser printers and these compatible toners were not so good.0

Take the toner cartridge out and give it a good shake. Normally the "only half printing a page" thing occurs because the toner is unbalanced so you get more on the "heavy" side than the light. It should then be okay for a while. With regards to toner and compatible toners, they'll be fine. Powder is powder after all.1

I've got an HP 1102 printer and after finishing the original HP toner cartridge I've always used compatible toner cartridges without any problems.

I've used IJT Direct compatible cartridges in my HP laser. There is always a voucher code to be found. I have swapped to CartridgeSave for my Brother printer as their regular price is close to the IJT voucher price and they deliver much more quickly. Both IJT Direct and Cartridge Save have replaced bad cartridges, without quibbling.

I buy from printerinks.com. Last one cost just under £18 a couple of years ago, though I think I had a 20% offer from them, possibly because I don't print that much so the toners lasts a long time so they send me offers to encourage me to spend! My current spare cartridge has no brand name on it, just a number and a 'Made in China' label . . . surprise, surprise

The HP p1102's seem to last for ages, rather like HP LaserJet 4's did...
