Business rates linked to another company

Hi
I've recently gone into business with a partner and just received a business rates bill for our premises. He has another business which I have nothing to do with but they've linked the rates Bill's. They have similar names but can I appeal the decision... surely I shouldn't be paying rates on my company because of my partner having other interests...I'd really appreciate advice as I dont want to get on any trouble but it just seems wrong
