Surely the same is true of a competent builder.  We had ours installed by a builder who managed all the other trades.  I installed my previous kitchen myself and the basic installation job isn't exactly rocket science.
Not strictly true. Once, and only ever once, we allowed a customer to buy from us and have their builder install into the extension. He made an absolute hash of it. Started one end and worked round, by the time he got to the opposite end they were so out of level the end panels didn’t touch the floor. Also, we come across bodge jobs by builders daily, they don’t take any care and the difference in fit quality is glaring if you know what a good fit is supposed to be. Ditto kitchen quality. So we’d always recommend a kitchen fitter fit kitchens! We do our own fits using our cabinet makers and coordinate with plumbers and sparks etc as one team.
Which is why I said 'competent builder'.  The person who did that job presumably left their horse in the front garden while they did the work.

Sooooo....fitter got back to me and said he thought the price quoted was actually cheap!
Sounds like you need a new fitter.

We had a Howdens kitchen fitted end of last year and they played silly devils about pricing until we got a DIY kitchens quote and told our fitter we would go with them instead. Howdens then agreed to price match.

  • Howdens told me they are trade only. Despite me buying skirting from them a couple of years ago. Is this true?

Basically true.  They will provide bits and pieces to non-trade customers.
