Hi. So I’ll try and keep this brief. I had a property with my ex and energy supplier was Scottish power. We had a smart meter. Both worked so turned of non eesential electricals. We split up and I received an email asking for payment for 552.74. I only stayed in property from September to January and most we spent on electricity was a fiver at most a day. I’ve been trying for a year to get a breakdown of the bill and they refuse to give me it as I’m not named on the account. Anything I can do? My ex is unwilling to contact them

Unless the meter was installed by SP its unlikely to be smart and would have needed you to read the meter. Did you read the meter when you moved in and when you left ?
£5 a day from Sept to Jan is 20 weeks or so, about £700 - had you been paying any DD for those months.?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Send a recorded delivery letter headed COMPLAINT by Royal Mail asking for a deadlock letter by return. Go to the Ombudsman upon receipt or after eight weeks if no response.0

Could you just clarify, was the email from your ex, or from Scottish Power?Do you have meter readings and previous bills?... and you say it was a smart meter, can we assume it was not in PAYG mode? So you had a credit account which you piad vai a monthly DD or similar, not by topping up a key for example?0

So email was from Scottish power. And it was a new build house so housing association gave the meter reading direct to Scottish power. We never received anything from Scottish power asking to set up an account. So we thought it had been set up and then got an email asking for full payment0

You've probably ended up on a 'deemed' tariff, which is the most expensive. Always register immediately with the incumbent supplier, then consider switching to a cheaper tariff / company.0

How do you know what cost of electricity was consumed on a daily basis?
Inform the supplier to pursue the alleged debtor, and not you.
Who have you been paying since last September (until January) for your daily electricity consumption?
