COP for HMRC

I was just checking NatWest confirmation of payee by checking some existing payees in the Standing Order section. This also checks the payee name and account details to confirm the name or not. Some came us as a match, eg Barclays and others could not be checked eg Marcus.

I also checked HMRC NICO which I had set up for voluntary Class 3 NI contributions. I set this up before COP came in but in my payee list it recently came up as confirmed.

The sort code is 08-32-20 and the generic account number is 12001004. However I find that I can enter the payee name and account number as anything and it comes up as a match on 08-32-20. For example payee name Fred and account number 99999999 comes up as a match.

It doesn't really fill me with much confidence.

I got the same result in First Direct with a match for Fred

However, they did have a comprehensive list of large corporations. This included various HMRC accounts so choosing from a pre-populated list is a better option than NatWest.

NatWest does have a suggestion dropdown list for large corporations in the new payee section, including HMRC. Curiously though, this is not available in the new standing order seciton.

The important part of information you must input correctly for large organisations such as HMRC is the reference.
