Apprentice furlough vs laid off

As has already been mentioned above, furlough is completely optional on the part of the employer - so if they don't want to do it, they don't have to - they're within their rights to just turn around and say 'no' without a reason.0

True but depending on the type of contract that does not mean they don't have pay the person. Although granted know nothing about apprentice contracts, so it would depend if the contract is like a zero hour contract or one with set hours.

Definitely speak to her apprenticeship advisor at the college.Although colleges are officially closed departments like this should still be available to speak to although a message will probably have to be left first for the call to be returned. Usually there is a standard set of checks carried out by the college and I would have thought a contract would have formed part of those.1

You need to be quick though because after the 10th June, it's too late for her to be furloughed.

Yes, these are my thoughts too! I’m feeling the college have let her down too to be honest as she is sure she has not signed any contract. I feel for her. She has been employed since August whilst studying her course 1 day per week at college. Then obviously this has happened with COVID, she has thought in all good faith she will receive furlough yet through no fault of her own she is left with absolutely nothing. She can’t get universal credit because she is 17 and has no children or isn’t pregnant! It just doesn’t seem right. He boss has even told her she is lucky to have been paid for the first 6 months of her apprenticeship as she didn’t have to pay her!! I don’t believe that is accurate at all??!!!
