Self employed grants

Hi

I have a question about the self employed furlough grants and I was wondering if anyone could help.

The question is:
Are self employed people allowed to carry on working once they receive the free grant from the government?

If they carry on working will they have to pay the grant back?

And if employed people are receiving furlough pay, how come they aren’t allowed to work, yet self employed people getting the equivalent money in the form of a grant are allowed to work?

Is this fair?

Yes you can carry on working. You can only claim it if you've been adversely affected.
Those that have been furloughed by their employer can work for another employer at the same time as being furloughed IF that employer agrees to it. They just can't work for the employer that's furloughing them.

The Self employed grant is taxable. Yes, they are allowed to work if they receive the grant.
With the employee furlough scheme, you can work, just not for your employer until the start of July when it will be allowed part time
  • Ok, so is it fair that self employed are getting the grant whilst still working?
Say I was furloughed for 4 weeks by my employer I would get just under £2000 after tax, and then return to work, yet self employed could carry on working the whole time and get a £5000-£6000 grant on top of that.
    Am I missing something?

There's nothing stopping you supplementing your income by working elsewhere, if your contract of employment allows it. Many employees are. Not all self employed people are able to continue their self employment (hairdressers for example), but still have business bills like rent to pay, which employees don't have.

Concentrate on our own situation and making the best of your own circumstances and stop worrying about what others may or may not be getting, the rules are not organised in a way to ensure 'fairness' to everyone, thinking this way is more likely to cause you anguish than produce any beneficial outcomes for yourself.
