P87 - Working from Home with my personal Computer

Hello, since COVID-19 lockdown, I have been told to work from home. From my understanding, the flat rate for expenses will be valid when I eventually complete my annual tax return.
However, my employer has failed to provide me with a laptop to work from home. What I can do is remotely log-in via virtual desktop software and control my work desktop machine still running in the office.
My personal PC was in poor condition at the end of it's life prior to this and is now failing frequently under the routine daily demand of working from home. Do I fall within the criteria to put the purchase of a new computer under the P87 tax allowance if this machine fails? My employer will not provide a laptop.

If you've been told to work from home onus on your employer to provide you with the tools.

Don't think you do as the employer is meant to provide the equipment for home working.

No reasonable employer can expect you to work from home without providing suitable equipment. What would they have done if you hadn’t got a computer available at all?

Ask them to let you go into the office to collect you desktop, monitor, keyboard and mouse. We did this for those people who didn’t have laptops, and if necessary paid for taxis for those who don’t drive.
  • HiI all.

I've been working from home since March and our office  is currently only partially open to senior staff and I'm not permitted access for any reason. My employers haven't provided any financial support for heating, electricity etc or for items to make a good working environment - stationary, postage etc and have  brought my own desk and lamp.

Can anyone advise - should I submit my P87 now and then do again later?

Tell your employer your laptop is broke and therefore you cannot work unless they provide the tools

It's the OP who had laptop problems, although hopefully they're now resolved after 4 months. The poster you're replying to has different needs.
