Do I really need to keep these documents any more?

I still have a stack of old documents for my last two cars sitting in a folder in a drawer. Given that I haven't owned either of these cars for years is it actually necessary to hold onto them? Apologies if this sounds like a dumb question but I just don't want to put them through the shredder until I'm sure.

What kind of documents? The answer is likely no, you don't need to keep them.

Keep the insurance certificates from the last six years. It's technically possible that somebody could claim. But everything else? Bin.
I assume service records, old MOTs etc all went to the new owners of the cars?0 -
I part-exchanged both of them at dealers. The former of the two was only my second car and was actually part-exed under the government scrappage scheme. I still have the log book for that one. Since I can't recall being asked for them in either case, I also still have the old MOT certificates and insurance certificates, letters confirming and explaining/detailing the insurance policies, the forms and receipts from the part-ex, user manuals... that's about it I think.

Just bin them. I tend to keep the last couple of years of insurance renewal letters to show proof of no claims but that's all.0

The only reason to keep any older insurance certs is to remind yourself who you were insured with.
These days you tend to not even get a paper certificate - rather a PDF certificate (which you can print if you want to).0
