Missed Filing Deadline for Self Employment Income Support Scheme

I was a week late submitting my 2018-19 tax return due to having to wait for an authorisation code through the post, (I had my government gateway ID & password to log into my account, but was not able to send in tax return). I am now told by HMRC that I am not eligible for the support scheme even though they are still accepting new claims until mid July. I fully understand that once again I have left things a bit late, but does the punishment fit the crime. I am down to loose thousands! Any advise from someone who has overcome this situation?

  • You should have filed your 18/19 tax return by 31/01, that was extended to 23/04 for the purposes of claiming the SEISS grant, on that basis you were not a week late, but three months late.
You had over a year to file and pay your tax return to be eligible to claim the SEISS grant and you chose not to, which means you are not compliant with the rules of the scheme and therefore will not recieve the grant.
You will not overturn the decision of HMRC, their actions are entirely in line with the rules of the scheme and the law as written.

I fully understand my situation so there is no need for the lecture........................good luck with your promotion with HMRC
  • If you fully understand your situation then why are you asking? If you are not prepared to file your tax return and pay your taxes on time, or even three months late, then do not expect the taxpayer to be prepared to bail you out.

I'm not sure what advice you would like. No one will overcome this situation because you didn't file your tax return before the extended deadline.

If you read my post, I am seeking advise from anyone who is in the same situation. I am not asking for a lecture. My post is not intended for you, and your tone is not welcome.
  • My tone is factual, you seem to not like facts. You will not "overcome" the fact that you do not comply with the rules of the scheme because they can not be retrospectively complied with, therefore you are not eligible for the grant.

A couple of other people posting on here have also filed late and appealed. None have been successful because the criteria has been set and there is no leeway.

Have you tried applying for a Bounce Back loan and/or claiming benefits depending on your situation?

The OP will not overcome the position and find a way to become eligible for SEISS.
As said above, BBLS and / or UC may be possible.
Also, tax deferrals and loan / mortgage payment holidays.
The OP does not say what they do for business, but if they have business premises then they may qualify for one of the grant schemes.
