British Airways Redundancies: Shameful Opportunism During COVID-19 Pandemic

  • The issue is the economy is a total mess, furloughing millions has probably saved millions of jobs, but for many millions more it has merely delayed the inevitable. BA and the whole travel industry is going to be much smaller, with much less demand going forward, a third of all pubs, possibly half of all restaurants, a huge chunk of music venues, the events and exhibition industries are going to see huge contractions.

The idea that you can oppose that, or take legal action that will in any way change that is farcical. Taking legal action against BA is not going to result in millions more people flying.

We are facing the worst economic contraction in history, the ongoing recession and possibly depression will certainly be worse than anything since The Great Depression and may even exceed that. We are all going to have to change how we work, where we work and adapt to stay in or gain employment. It is insane to expect that one can merely sue oneself to a solution.

Furlough has merely delayed the onset of redundancies. Quantas in Australia laid off 20,000 employees in March on 6 months unpaid leave. Restructuring is a full on fact of life.  Ask Rolls Royce, Lookers, McClaren , Aston Martin, National Trust.  The list goes on. This is a full on recession not a party game.
Yes, the main issue iswis large firms should be doing this while the staff are on furlough which means the notice periods etc are paid for by the taxpayer - that is what the government consider not to be in the spirit of the scheme... And BA are not the only ones in HMGs sights (though have got the most publicity)
Government (i.e. the taxpayer) picks up the tab if a company goes bust and fails to pay employees their legal entitlements.  Furlough has given companies a breathing space to make thought out plans.

Who was it that said "The first casualty in any battle is the plan" ?
    • All land is owned. If you are not on yours, you are on someone else's
    • When on someone else's be it a road, a pavement, a right of way or a property there are rules. Don't assume there are none.
    • "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere
