Is this a scam

We had a telephone call from Money Saving Experts (Steven Jones) saying that we were due £4,920 due to us from missold PPI from Halifax.  They were coming to deliver the cheque to us in person but they needed an Amazon gift card for £200.  He said that he needed to see proof we had this Amazon gift card before they would release the cheque and then once the cheque is cleared they will come back for the Amazon card.  In the meantime we purchased an Amazon gift card and now have been told by Amazon that our account has been compromised.and someone has reportedly tried to access our account.  I think this is a scam and want to know if anyone else has had the same trouble.  When they said they were from Money Saving Experts I thought they were reliable as we trust Martin Lewis.

Why would MSE ever request an amazon gift card to give you a cheque? Change your Amazon password (by logging directly into amazon, but NOT through any links you have received on an email), add 2 factor authentication, don't give money/passwords/sensitive information to random people that call you, even if they say they are XYZ

No, never had a problem with my Amazon account since 2002. Mind you I do not on the off chance of a phone call purchase a gift card for some amount of money to a person I do not know because they rang me. I suppose you gave them access to verfify the gift you had bought them and lo and behold, Amazon rightly no longer want you custom!

    Lesson!
If it is too good to be true, it is a scam.

Just yesterday the nice lady for the sub continent rang about my amazon Direct Debit had failed again and I was to be cancelled! Best thing is she was on me for twenty minutes! Shame she rang you afterwards!

MSE don't investigate complaints for you, and certainly wouldn't handle your cash.

Mr Lewis doesn't live here anymore.
The title is, Money Saving Expert, not plural . . . money saving experts could refer to anyone.

  • I’m afraid it’s a scam.

Why would someone even ask for a £200 gift card? Scam from start to finish.
