Malaysia Airlines - no refund just voucher

I have done a search but can't find anything on this subject. I have flights booked in August to KL from LHR. The flights have been cancelled and the airline have advised they can't offer a refund only a voucher. The voucher needs to be used by June 2021 whcih is no good for me as we are tied to summer school holidays (can't do Easter due to work).
I tried asking them about the EU law which means they have to refund but they denied all knowledge, and I think that only applies to the LHR-KL leg anyway and not the return flight as Malaysia Airlines is not an EU airling (is that correct?)
Not sure where to go from here. I booked on Amex and also have RAC travel insurance. Has anyone got any advise for me please?
Thank you

Once you have something in writing from them saying they won't refund, it's time to turn to Amex.
Raise a section 75 dispute for the transaction, but bear in mind with what's going on it'll take a while longer than normal to resolve.0 -
Ok that's helpful thank you. I'll get back on the phone to them and ask for it in writing.0

Try a Chargeback before S75 as should be quicker, if Chargeback fails (Amex seems to be hit and miss with them), then S75

Thanks, I had a google as not sure what a chargeback was, but it looks to be for if you don't recognise a transaction - is that right? Obviously I do recognise it so unsure if that's what I should use? thanks for the help0

Malaysian hasn't offered anyone a refund, they are in breach of the law and you are entitled to a full refund. The CAA whose job it is to enforce the rules has asked everyone having problems with specific airlines to send details to passengercomplaints@caa.co.uk0
