School Ski Trip Delayed Refund

Hi,
I wonder if anyone may be able to help.
My son's school was running a long -haul and quite costly ski trip at Easter which was obviously cancelled.
At every point, School has reassured parents that the trip is fully insured and we will have a complete refund, which is reassuring.
However, School is saying that they need to obtain refunds from all "suppliers" where they can , (parents believed it to be a package trip run by a specialist educational tour operator), before resorting to insurance.
I may well be wrong, but I thought that the purpose of the policy would be to refund us and then the Insurer would seek to mitigate their costs, where possible, through recovery with the tour operator / "suppliers".
It seems the School finance department is working hard to try to get the money back, and they may well have been told that this is the correct way to do it, but is it ?
We all fully accept the difficulty of the situation but to many pupils this doesn't just represent a cancelled holiday but a few years worth of Christmas / birthday money and some families are now in very different financial circumstances than they were a few months ago.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The School is correct, the insurer is the last option, so the school will have to try to get it refunded via the tour operator.
New User name as MSE gave me a number in my old one.

Life_goes_On, thank you for your reply.
I am thrown a little by the "suppliers" ( plural ) statement, surely if this was a package it would be a straight charge back to the TO, not waiting for them to recoup costs?0 -
Yes, if it was a package it would just be one contract, so one supplier. You need to find out how the school booked it, and what legal advice they are taking to get a refund.Lacemaker said:Life_goes_On, thank you for your reply.
