I have finally had a message from https://www.holidaycottages.co.uk/ advising me that if our party of four families cannot go because of government guidance, then they would like us to look at deferring the holiday to another date.

As the holiday was a weeks break to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary, it makes no sense to reschedule it.

We have paid a deposit but as yet not the balance as they told us we didnt have to.

I have advised them, if we cannot go we would like a refund.

Are we within our rights to request a refund of our deposit (approx £1500) in cash?
I think this depends on when the holiday date is, where you are going and  if it is not available on the date you are due to travel.   If it is not open/available then you can request a refund.   IF, it is still in the 'unsure' stage then you would have to wait until nearer the time.   You are being given the opportunity to rearrange now so am assuming it is very close to your departure date?   If you don't want to rebook, then do nothing, hold on until the date arrives.   But by same token if given the green light and the accommodation is open then you will have to pay the balance and go or forefit the deposit.
    Hiya, thanks for the reply.

We are due to arrive at a large house in Devon on 11 july for a week.  We are a party of 14 which consist of four families.
3 families of 4, and one family of 2 pensioners, both of whome have had heart/cancer surgery in the past twleve months.
2 of the other adults are key worker and one of them has been diagnosed with a heart issue recently.

As far as I know at the moment only two families can be together at anyone time.  I have seen nothing to state that 4 families would be able to cohabit overnight.

11th July from earlier post so unless anything happens it will be open. I would accept the move or if no use to you then give it to your parents as a present let them have a nice week away.

That is not the owner's problem, you have paid for a cottage you are getting a cottage, you can go to the cottage. You just can’t all go to the cottage.Still think the change to move was a fair offer.

Yep, I think their offer is fair and now that things are allowed to open your personal circumstances are your problem, not theirs.

The owner of the cottage contacted us yesterday to ask if we were coming as the booking company had not contacted her despite us being in contact with them for the last 3 months.

We advised her about our discussions and she opted to call them herself as she actually rented out her own home for the season and took a break elsewhere herself.

Result was a voicemail last night from the booking asking to confirm the details of the cancellations request we made.
I responded by telling them we hadnt requested cancellation.

A call today from the booking company released us from the booking and confirmed a full cash refund to the debit card.

We did thank her on her initial call, she was in total agreement with us and said she wished more people would act as responsibly.

She was absolutely wonderful.  She was less than impressed with the booking company though.
