Washing machine smells

Looking for some advice. My upstairs sink in the toilet would have a sewage like smell when I turned it on. In case it was something in the pipes going down and turn on the water made it smell, I put some drain cleaner in it and so far it looks like the smell has gone.
Other problem is that when I turn on the washing machine a foul, sewage like smell fills the rooms. Just now it was so bad that I had to spray the kitchen. I'm not sure whether it's linked to the upstairs sink at all but would be interested in getting a few idea of what the problem could be?

You will need to do some investigation. Lift the drain covers around your house and see if there is any standing water in them. It could be that there's a blocked drain.0
