Advice please on gym membership

Hi, when vivid first started my gym said it would not be freezing contracts and we will still need to pay regardless of the situation. I rang to complain, the manager then said he would freeze my contract but not to tell anyone as they still need money of others being a ‘small business’ my contract was to end July so I have emailed to say I would like to end the contract and not renew another years, he told me I would still owe them the 12 months pay?
I would just like to know whether this would be true. I have read the terms and conditions and it states ‘membership shall continue for a minimum period of 12 months’ not 12 payments.
some advice would be useful. Thank you.

he told me I would still owe them the 12 months pay? That is not a question. So, it doesn't need a question mark.I would just like to know whether this would be true. That is the question and where the question mark should be.Suspension of payment and services effectively freezes it at that point in time until resumption. e.g. 6 months paid, then 5 months suspension, then restarting means you are only 6 months through your contract at the restart.

Thanks for the reply, however what you are saying is not stated anywhere in the Terms and Conditions of my contract.
