Holiday party shielders not wishing to travel

Hi my family have a holiday booked for Gran Canaria on 30th July for 2 weeks and based on the current information, I am assuming that Ryanair will be flying and that we will be able to go. however two of the party are my in laws who although very fit for their 83/84 years of age means they are currently shielding. They are wary about travelling so soon after easing of restrictions and therefore are wanting to delay coming on holiday with us until the following year.

my question is therefore would this be an acceptable request to Ryanair to refund their flights or issue a voucher for them or what other options are available? rather not lose out on near £700

It’s worth asking for a refund (the worst they can say is no 😉) but I’d expect vouchers as in my opinion as Ryanair would probably take it as ‘disinclination to travel’ (albeit on medical advice). You could also ask to change date (if you want to of course).

    Have they got travel insurance?

This is disinclination to travel - so their choice, not Ryanair's.

Travel insurance is the only route - Ryanair won't refund if the flight is going ahead and they just don't want travel.

Travel insurance would pay out for a medical problem but shielding is purely advice, albeit strong advice.
If the only reason that they are shielding is age
although very fit for their 83/84 years of age means they are currently shielding

then I can't see travel insurance paying out
