You've clearly been very sensible with your money and I applaud that, but I wouldn't want you, your family, or anyone else to do anything that could be considered questionable in the eyes of the law. You've worked too hard to fall foul of that.
Barclays and NatWest allow a child to open an account from the age of 11 with parent present. Perhaps this is the best way forwards?
At the moment I was mainly trying to find a "safe" way for him to have an option for eg to go into McDonald's if he gets lost on the way to or from High School, buy himself some food and (providing he does not lose the pay as you go phone I will get him!) wait for me to come pick him up. I don't know if they even let children have cash money as such in High School. I am just anxious about him being out all on his own with no actual adult responsible for him at that time, he's never been in that situation before. Maybe once I realise he isnt going to be abducted or robbed etc I might feel safe sewing an emergency £5 note into the lining of his coat!

I wasn't even aware that pre-paid cards existed until a friend told me he got one for his own use.I am still feeling incredulous at this "mule" thing the other person here said about. I have sold the odd thing on ebay years ago, nothing expensive but I can imagine how easy it would be for someone to say they cannot get paypal and can they have my account number and sort code so that they can pay me via BACS and how logical that would seem and yet it might open me to the "mule" thing. It's incredulous what some people will think of. I need to get a more "in tune" and modern up-to-date "radar" I think :-)0
