Tour operators changing your holiday

So legally how long can a tour operator know the accommodation they sold you is no longer available before they tell you?

I'm friends with the owner of the apartments I've booked through Tui and he advised that he cancelled the contract with TUI but they are not acknowledging it yet so I cant get my money back. 
I used to work in Travel myself so know the basics but these rules or guidelines im not sure about, surely they should be letting everyone know as soon as the contract has ended?

I think they would be on less stable ground if they are still actively selling the accommodation to new customers.

The property being on their website, or even not notifying existing bookings may not be considered as much an issue.

Whilst your friend may have indicated that he has cancelled the contract it may not be as straight forward as you, or he thinks.  There might be other factors and legal ramifications which have yet to surface. In the meantime the accommodation may still be marketed and sold.

Have a look to see if you can find the accommodation and try to make a dummy booking.
