Employer taking on casual staff

Myself and my colleague have been furloughed due to the coronavirus and my employer has advised me she has taken on casual staff to help out, are employers able to pay for casual staff whilst employees are on the furlough scheme. It seems wrong.
Thank you

There is nothing stopping them against the spirit of the scheme but as with many things they can.

It does sound wrong. But it also sounds like a business desperate to survive which saw that it can employ someone to do the work cheaper than paying your wage. I don't know about the legalities of whether they're allowed to keep you furloughed when there is clearly work available, but I suppose at least your job is still secure for now?

Would you prefer to be paid for just the hours you actually work? Rather than remain on the payroll. Casual sounds very ad-hoc on a needs must basis.

If there isn't enough work for you to be working a full week then yes its acceptable to furlough you and then pay someone else to come in on a casual ad hoc basis

The rules have changed so you can be on furlough and still go in part time from 1st July
