Conversely, they're not just going to take the policyholder's word for it that it must be some sort of mistake by the other party. I doubt there's much you can do other than wait until they've sorted it out.

I'm sure this is a mistake, however there must be cases where, post accident, a driver has said 'not me guv, I wasn't there - someone's got the wrong plate...' in response to a claim.  What evidence do you have that the car was not in use on the day concerned, or that it was nowhere near the accident site?  If you haven't got it to hand, then start collecting it: memories fade, things disappear etc.  If it comes to it you may need it, therefore it's wise to have it.
