Short-term stay in the UK under new 14-day quarantine rules

I'm a UK resident working in London, however I have been staying at my family home in Italy since the end of February as, after I went back for a weekend to visit family, I was unable to travel back due to coronavirus restrictions. I am now intending to travel back for a long weekend in July (arriving the 8th, and returning to Italy on 12 July) to sort out some things and bills at my London flat.

However, while I will self-isolate for the duration of my stay, I am concerned that with the current quarantine rules I will not be able to travel back because I am technically not meant to leave my flat for 14-days, and obviously going to the airport to fly back means leaving my apartment. I'm assuming quarantine will still be in place in July.

My question is: are short-term stays in the UK allowed under the quarantine rules valid from 8 June, provided you abide by the regulations for the duration of your stay, or are you allowed to fly back and leave the UK only after 14 days of self-isolation?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much in advance!!

I would say you have to isolate for the full 14 days , going back after a weekend would not be allowed ( although would anyone stop you ? )

Would Italian border control ask questions ?

  • Hi Ib00 - I don't think anybody knows the answer for sure as nobody can tell what the rules and regs will be in July.  I would agree with Browntoa though, if it is still the same then you would probably be expected to isolate accordingly. Nobody knows if you would be challenged at the airports at either end.   I would think you would be (otherwise the rule is pointless) but who knows?

While the current regs have a long list of rather niche exemptions none would
appear to apply to you; your plans are not lawful.
How it will be enforced I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me if the UK Border Force kept some records and matched them up. In general I don’t think borders are places to mess around with rules. Border agents aren’t known for their relaxed attitudes.
Of course nobody can say what the rules will be in July and it is clear the UK government is coming under a lot of pressure about these plans.
No idea about the Italian regs.
  • I read on Flyertalk that you are allowed to go to airport and leave. Don't think I will be able to find relevant post now.

It was posted somewhere in this thread https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/coronavirus-travel/2016518-uk-government-announces-14-day-quarantine-arrivals-49.html
