I've an old wrought iron garden seat that's seen better days, it's got a lattice style seat base, not sure what type of metal that is but it's covered in surface rust. It'll be a pita to try and clean it down by hand and then repaint so I was thinking of getting it shot blasted somewhere but then I'm not sure whether it's better to get it powder coated at the same time or should I spray/paint it by hand. Any ideas of what it would likely cost to get it blasted and powder coated?

The alternative of course is to just junk it, but that's not very MSE 😉

With grit/shot blasting, if it isn't painted straight away, it will often develop a slight coating of rust. If you have it powder coated, it will go straight from the grit blasting booth to the coating line and have very little time to start rusting. It won't add much to the overall cost either.

Couldn't you give it a good clean with a wire brush and detergent to remove any loose paint and dirt, then just paint it with one of the many direct-onto-rust type metal paints?

getting it shot blasted and powdercoated will be the best job, but I would expect to pay less than £100 depending on the size.
wire brush attachement in a cordless drill and a tin of paint and it's an ideal job to keep you busy at a fraction of the cost??
