I'd either get real wood - original or reclaimed floorboards or new ones - and appreciate the natural variation and character that scuffs bring, or go totally fake with LVT.  I can't stand the 'clack clack' of laminates, or even engineered wood.  I prefer tiles to sheets of vinyl as you can replace a tile if needed, although we have LVT in the kitchen where I'm always dropping heavy and sharp things and I can't see any damage after several years.

We're going for wood effect porcelain tiles for the whole of our downstairs, plus rugs in some places. We laid them in another house and you couldn't tell they weren't wood unless you got down on the floor.

We've had vinyl, cheap and expensive before but with dogs and clumsy children it always got cut or punctured at some point

We're currently waiting for Karndean wood effect LVT to be installed throughout our downstairs (company are closed due to lockdown).  We had it in our rental and it was excellent.

Our daughter had one of the light oak plank type LVT designs right through the ground floor of her previous house and it was still like new 6 years on.  Her Dad fitted it, very easy to do, and put it down diagonally so that any squint walls would not be an issue.
He has also fitted the same in the kitchen of a flat her OH rents out, and we have it in our utility room.
She now has the same stuff in a slightly different colour in the utility area and store rooms in her present house.
