Travel insurance only paying proportion of claim

Hi -
I booked a self-catering cottage in the UK for a family holiday, cancelled due to lockdown. My insurers have agreed to pay the claim - but only my proportion of the booking! They say the other members of my family are not covered under my policy, but I paid the full cost myself. I'm only asking them to cover the cost of the cottage, not other parts of the booking like travel. Surely as the financial loss is 100% mine they should pay the full cost (less excess obviously)?
Thanks in advance!

It's common practice to do this
How many people are on the booking form, are they all adults?

7 people in total. It just feels bizarre when the financial loss is entirely mine. There is no difference in the cost whether I am staying in the property on my own or with 7 other people - it's not like it's a hotel where you're charged a per person rate?0

I'd have a good read of your policy terms. Whilst they typically state they only pay out for the insured persons proportions of costs, in this case you can argue that your proportion is 100%. I've checked my terms this morning and can't find any definitions of proportions, and as you've indicated, you are the only person that has suffered a financial loss and therefore the only person that can claim this back. Other people on your trip should have their own insurance for travel, medical etc

If you can prove it was your cost and your cost alone, then you might have a chance, but I don't feel a good one.
But you can always complain and end up taking it to the Ombudsman (this is free for you),
