  • I don't really know the specifics but you say you might consider moving back after a year or will sell the house. So really you only want a short term tenancy? a+I'm not sure how many people want to move into a house for a year only for the owner to then want it back, and would the council be willing to take on something for a short period. Maybe they have requirements where this is concerned. I would also assume short term tenancies would encourage more problematic tenants as they will not regard your property as their long term home. If you are only willing to do a short term rental then look at spareroom.com which might be more suitable.

    Councils/housing associations tend to want a minimum of two years so that the tenants "integrate" into the community, which meant in my case being a local drug supplier, at a low level I suspect and to fund his own taking.
    On the scheme I was on the HA provided the insurance. I got the house back when I needed it but the state was such that I had to escalate my complaint to get recompense, and the snagging list and story was definitely one long enough to be told over a bottle (or two..) of wine. Floor coverings weren't covered by their guarantee, which was a shame as all the carpets disappeared, every tile in the kitchen was chipped, the laminate in the hall disappeared and that in the lounge and dining room looked as if they'd had regular furniture moving competitions.. The garden was also an interesting story..
    So I wouldn't recommend the HA I used, and perhaps a local landlords association may be able to give you local advice
