Also, will this be removed in 3 years automatically (half way through the 6 year period), do you think there is any hope that if I contact Nationwide to have this removed as I am now self employed so no employment or potential fraud they suspected at the time would even be applicable now?
I'm not sure why your change in circumstances matters here. after all, you can still lie on an application if you want, your current circumstances don't change that. and of course, the purpose of the marker is to warn others that they believe you've lied on an application in the past, it's not saying that you will do it again.0 -
Yes should be removed automatically six years after date it was registered with CIFAS.
Won't be removed before unless you can prove the information you provided at the time was accurate.
Unfortunately I have CIFAS markers which are factually correct from four years ago, as I had moved a lot around 2013-2015 following a messy breakup and getting my life back on track, I neglected to list every single address I'd lived at.
I wasn't attempting to deceive anyone but the neglect on my part regrettably did happen and was my fault, so the CIFAS markers stand. Lesson learned, life goes on2 -
But the strangest curiosity is how I've managed to successfully obtain mortgages, loans and credit cards all the while this has been on the CIFAS? Anyone know how, is it just these other lenders don't take the CIFAS marker as a concern for their lending?0

A CIFAS marker isn't an automatic bar to entry.
It depends on who you're applying to, and what category the marker is. And not all financial institutions subscribe to CIFAS.
CIFAS markers prompt financial institutions to look more closely at an application, and depending on the institution they may have different policies.0 -
It depends what the marker was for, if you lived at five addresses, but missed one out, that would be taken as a fraud warning, but it would also be viewed less severely than falsifying documents such as earnings. If you missed an address off you might well get a CIFAS marker, if you missed an address off that had a debt being chased against you at that address (but not at the others) then that would be seen as a deliberate attempt rather than just incompetence. If you falsified earnings documents then that is full on deliberate fraud and will block you from credit for the life of the marker, you might also be prosecuted.
Some institutions will not lend to anyone with a CIFAS marker, some will but will scrutinise the application in more detail, others will or will not depending on what the CIFAS marker was for. It will also depend on the product.
I have heard of people getting a CIFAS marker for missing off and address and were unable to get loans, although they could get a mortgage through a specialist lender as it was secured against the property. I know of someone who gained a CIFAS marker by falsifying tax returns and bank statements to try and get a bigger mortgage, he could not even get a bank account or mobile phone contract.0 -

Thanks Awolf, any idea which lenders seem to lend irrespective of or ignore the CIFAS marker, she will be looking to sell and buy again soon and is concerned that this may bar her from borrowing again, it was only Lloyds not opening an additional account that alerted her to the problem, despite that they are not bothered about the existing two current accounts, personal loan and credit card she has with them and I am sure the personal loan has been taken out since the CIFAS marker was lodged0

I have just read the feed. I am currently in the process of obtaining a Morgage I have a cifa 6 which was applied when my friend sent money into my account £160. Believe it or not it was from a stolen account!! TSB cancelled my account, I was with them for 15 years.Since then I have opened credit cards and no issue. I have applied for a mortgage now through the help to buy so far nothing has flagged and I have the valuation booked. I’m so nervous as I hope it doesn’t flag. All
my other accounts haven’t been effected and I have kept my current account with Halifax and starling with no issue x fingers crossed it doesn’t flag up.. I thought it would of by now0 -
Hi all. I’m new to this so have just signed up to comment. I have a CIFAS marker and it would’ve been on my file for 5 years in September so it’s coming up to the end. I am however currently in the position where I wish to apply for a mortgage, but am worried that this CIFAS marker may stop me from obtaining one. I’m unable to open a bank account with it, so it makes me thing what is even the point in applying for a mortgage? It really shocks me the extent that this marker affects your financial life. It effectively makes sure you don’t have one! I’ve appealed to CIFAS, and the company that placed the marker, and also the FOS. All of which weren’t able to do anything - so I just feel backed into a corner. I really need a mortgage, but can’t help but feel this will heavily effect my chances in obtaining one. If anyone has had experiences regarding this, please feel free to share. Thanks, Luke.0
