Furloughed & expected to work

I have been furloughed by my employer immediately after my maternity leave finished so I haven’t been back to work yet. I spoke to my employer today and it sounds as though they are expecting me to do as much work as possible whilst at home. I have no childcare and a 1 year old at home so will really struggle to get much done. As far as I’m aware, I’m still furloughed. Am I within my rights to say I can only do work when I manage to around looking after my child? (I didn’t think you were meant to work at all whilst on furlough!?) thanks!

Sounds as if your employer is gearing up to restart business. Furlough is at the discretion of the employer. You may need to renegotiate your working hours etc if childcare is an issue in the short term.0

If you are furloughed then you can't do any work for them. If they are planning on restarting work you will have to discuss your childcare issues with your manager.1
