Should my deposit be returned?

Hi, in January I booked a UK cottage break to take place in July through a holiday company. At the time I was asked to pay a £320 deposit (holiday was £900 in total) to reserve the cottage. I am cancelling this holiday now as it was supposed to be our honeymoon but our wedding is also postponed. However, the company are insisting on keeping all of the £320 'non-refundable' deposit as a cancellation charge. They said they would only return this if somebody else books the holiday for our dates (which is impossible given the current situation!). They have not outlined why the owner wishes to keep this or itemised their losses. I do understand but believe this is not legal? Thanks for any advice.

You are wishing to terminate for your own convenience so yes they can. If you continue with your booking and they are unable to provide then you will be due a refund2

As above, if it's you cancelling, you can't expect to get your full deposit back. If they are able to let the cottage and recover their costs you would be able to claim it back (minus a reasonable administrative charge) but you may need to go to court for that.
