UK Banks no longer want your business IF YOU ARE OVER 65 AND WANT TO GO ABROAD ON HOLIDAY!

We have all experienced the closure or shortened opening hours of the local branches we used to rely on but now the banks are developing a more invidious scheme to reject our business, TECHNOLOGY! Whilst our home computers running on Windows SE or 7 may still be able to access your bank account, your iPad mk II will not as the banks have updated their apps and no longer support the OS. Even if it did upgrade and spend £1000, you still have to take your little card reader to do anything meaningful! I thought computerisation was meant to make things easier!  A big con where relies on idiots spending thousands.

I agree, having to use a stupid little card reader is so annoying.  Would be much better to just be able to go into town to the nearest branch when you want to do some banking (during opening hours).

Move to a bank that doesn't use card readers.

Whilst I agree about App compatibility on older hardware, you can get a fairly cheap sim only smartphone to do only banking on apps & no need to spend £1000.

Im guessing you're with Nat West?
Seriously move, cos in my experience they are the worst going.

It should be noted that it is an EU directive that is forcing banks to improve online security.     So, when you say UK banks, you really mean any EU bank.  The UK is still subject to EU directives.

Also, the title of this thread is one of the daftest I have seen in a while and has nothing to do with subject.

And thank the Lord for those EU Directives as they have given us valuable things such as the £85k FSCS cover.

Well, I am over 65 and like to travel (where possible...), so I am interested. Which bank has rejected your business, and how have they done so? What did you buy for £1,000 that doesn't support the latest operating systems?

Not sure about your card reader issue. I have several dozen accounts, incl current accounts with just about everyone bar Triodos, and none of them make me use a card reader. Amongst my savings accounts, the last luddite now stopped making me use their grid card, a paper version of the card reader. Which bank & card reader are you stuck with?

    Interesting...
I actually want a bank to use strong two-factor authentication...  but I don't want to be forced to only one specific smartphone - so will happily take cardreaders or secure-code generators.
Because of SCA many banks are now requiring multi-channel authentication via SMS or one-time codes as per the EU Directive.
The biggest issue I'm now finding is that all banks assume that users only have _one_ phone so tie the SMS or one-time code authentication to just one mob.
I have the situation where I have a work mob, personal mob, work Laptop, home Laptop...  but the rules are that there are times I'm not allowed to have the personal mob with me at work.  That at home I don't want to have the work mob turned-on and there are work policies that only allow work provided Apps to be installed on the work phone.
Though, there are times where I need to do banking while at work (which is allowed) and I'd rather use the Laptops with bigger screens than piddly little phone screens.
For the last many years - I've been using a separate card-sized one-time secure code generator that is attached to my keys which the bank provided; which is not considered a security issue at work and allows me to use any device to access banking.  However, now the bank is trying to force me to do the same thing via their smartphone App - even for Internet banking.  They make it so hard that they close access to the account for "up to 10days" if they ever need to post you a new code-generator (but the phone App setup is only one phonecall).
I realize that my use case doesn't fit into the 99% - but the existing system worked.
The new system is only benefiting the bank as it is only software on a device they don't have to pay for!
Forcing authentication via SMS or secure-code via smartphone App is not as flexible - but only provides the same level of security.
