Hi,
Ive accepted a TUI voucher as a refund and used it to book a holiday for next year now instead. My understanding is if the company goes under I would lose my money. If I pay over £100 now (though the balance isn’t due until May 21) would I then be covered in full even though part of it was paid as a refund voucher. I originally paid the previous holiday by credit card. Thank you for your help.

Your new holiday should be covered via S75 protection as far as I’m aware.

If it's a package holiday you should have an ATOL cert covering the new holiday, and that will pay out if TUI bites the dust.

With a credit card  you would only need to  pay 1p on it.
It's not how much you have paid on the credit card it's the total cost of the holiday that has to be over £100.

I’m sure Martin Lewis said on his program that if you spend anything on the holiday on your card then the full lot would be covered. If you don’t spend anything and it’s just vouchers I’ve heard you should be covered but not 100%

Thank you all for your responses.

I haven’t paid anything on credit card yet for the new holiday as the voucher covered most of it. I was just thinking whether I should pay some earlier to be covered between now and 2021. (Thank you Life_goes_on for the 1p reminder) I thought even under ATOL the voucher wouldn’t be covered fully, so to give me extra peace of mind I can pay something on the credit card. But sounds like you are saying that as I paid for the previous holiday on credit card I would be covered anyway or by ATOL? Am I understanding this correctly? Apologies for my ignorance.

If you have a new holiday then I believe you should have a ATOL cert for the new holiday.

As you took a voucher, the link might have been broken (no one is 100% sure)  so in this case you might not be protected by the credit card
If you had just swapped the holiday  to another date, then there is no break in the link and you would be covered by the credit card.

The danger with a voucher for a package holiday  is it's not 100% certain that the value will be covered in the event of a company going under.
But if the voucher is exchanged for a package holiday then it's covered by the ATOL cert.

For an extra layer of protection ( you shouldn't need it)  pay a small bit of the balance with a credit card and you will be totally bullet proof.

Thank you Life_goes_on. This is what my thinking was! Fingers crossed I won’t need it but as you say it can then be bulletproof.
