Changing relationship status on Facebook

I want to change my relationship status on Facebook without my friends being notified or it appearing in their feed.
I've clicked on my relationship status and changed it from "public" to "only me" and changed my relationship status. If I then change it back from "only me" to "public" , i take it everyone will be able to see it but my friends will not have been notified and it won't appear in their feed?

Everything you put on the great database of facebook is public! All I have to day as your friend is take a copy of any of your posts, and then send out as a picture. If you need true animosity, do not use facebook!0
