I know that you are able to work elsewhere if you are furloughed by your employer, but can you work for yourself while on furlough?

As long as has nothing to do with your paid job.1

Yes, though there are other threads about this and possibly more complexity if you are furloughed from your own Ltd Co.
- can you use equipment from the Ltd Co?
- insurances
- are the customer for you or for the Ltd Co?

Not furloughed from their own company but by an employer.0

Should be fine if the work has nothing to do with your employer.1

Then, that makes it much simpler.
The rules of furlough allow you to work for another company, or to work for yourself - the usual rules about registering and declaring tax apply.
The employment conditions still apply from the employer - that may not allow to do other work or may require the employer's permission. How willing the employer will agree I do not know, but if it is in competition they will almost certainly say "no".
The employer who furloughed can expect you to remain available to return to work and and very short (no) notice.
Depending on what it is, you may be better to not tell the employer, if they'll never find out anyway. Is the 'work for yourself' necessary to make up the shortfall in salary if furlough has not been topped up?1 -
Yes only being paid 80% no top up from employer. Not any form of competition either so should agree with no issues.0

Some employers object irrespective of anything else. Probably worth explaining the financial pressure and emphasise you will definitely want to return to normal work as soon as possible. Mention how you love the company and your undying loyalty to them.1
