Electricity
Between 14th April 2019 and 9th January 2020 you used 3,180kWh during 270 days. An average of 11.7kWh a day.
Between 9th January 2020 and 26th May 2020 you used 1,802kWh during 138 days. An average of 13kWh a day.
Gas
Between 14 April 2019 and 9th January 2020 you used 362 units of gas during 270 days. An average of 1.34 units a day.
Between 9th January 2020 and 26th May 2020 you used 258 units of gas during 138 days. An average of 1.87 units a day.
That seems consistent, bearing in mind the first period covers the whole of summer and part of winter; and the second period covers mainly colder months.
I've just checked Shell's current lowest prices. Their Energy July 2021 tariff:
Electricity standing charge: 38.560p per day
Electricity charge: 15.341p per kWh
Gas standing charge: 20.490p per day
Gas charge: 2.710p per kWh
Using those figures:
between 14th April 2019 and 26th May 2020 (408 days) you used 4,984 units of electricity. Cost: 408 days x £0.3856 + 4,984kWh units x £0.15341 = £921.87.
between 14th April 2019 and 26th May 2020 (408 days) you used 608 units of gas (about 6,688kWh). Cost: 408 days x £0.2049 + 6,688kWh x £0.0271 = £264.84.
A total cost of £1186.71 during that period.
You've made, what, 13 payments of £43. A total of £559.
Cost of energy used (£1186.71) - what you've paid (£559) = £627.71 owed to energy company.
My guess is that the tariff you're on offers better rates than Shell's current best tariff, hence the difference of about £150 in my example calculations. IIRC they used to be a lot better value.
I also guess your direct debit was set too low and your new bill represents the shortfall that has built up.1 -

And watch out when you go the comparison sites !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

Those prices took me by surprise too.
I live in South Wales. Shell's rates may be different in other areas. IIRC they were more competitive last year.
