How good is the Athlon Dual Core Processor TK55?

I've heard the Dell Vostro 1000 is a good laptop. How does this deal look?

Pretty sure it's better than all the stuff currently around that price bracket in Comet, Currys etc.

Views would be welcomed!

its a decent cpu, not as fast as the core2 duos and runs hotter so less battery time but way more than most people need, that seems a good price for the spec though i would whip vista off it in about 3.4 seconds

That spec Vostro 1000 is currently £345.45 direct from Dell.
Buying from Dell you'd have the option of adding on upgrades such as better battery for £10.

I've heard Vista isn't great, but not quite sure why! I'm basically looking for the best for my money for £400ish and less. Would you recommend an Intel or AMD for that kind of price? So many laptops around as its Christmas, but i'm guessing the majority are pretty toilet.

Also meant to say that direct from dell you have the choice of Vista or XP as a no cost option.
  • Is Vista really that bad an OS?

For most users, the difference between the AMD & Intel is irrelevant. Focus more on battery life, screen resolution etc. If your just surfing web, word processing etc. the choice of CPU makes next to no difference.
  • I need the laptop, for, other than a few bits of word processing and business things, to play Football Manager 2008 - not a game that requires a good graphics card, but is more about loading vast amounts of data (and most of all , making sure its never glitchy at all). I just want the best for my money at the end of the day!

Im not sure its so much about good and bad but..............Vista is the new OS, which means it will have bugs / glitches, a lot of people will probably wait until Vista SP1 is released before upgrading to Vista. Additionally its taken some time for some 3rd party suppliers to provide Vista compatible drivers etc (fairly rare now but still an issue sometimes).

I;m running a Inspiron 1501 AMD as we speak and no fan running?

You can buy a better machine for around the same money from Dell (when you include the P&P on the ebay item), plus you can get 5% cashback if you buy from Dell through quidco.
