Smartmeters going dumb

Options
I'm currently with British Gas and want to switch to a better deal, however I'd like to know which other suppliers will be able to use my 1st generation smartmeter. The last time I switched to another supplier the meter went dumb, then when I switched again, back to BG the meter had to be recommissioned - causing a few more problems.

Nobody else will be able to use it AFAIK. Just go for a supplier that requires a smart meter to be installed, which they do FOC when they're "installing in your area", which may be never. Or just keep providing manual readings and stay with the dumb meters you now have.

I have consigned my  in house display of First Generation BG smart meter to a drawer somewhere.. can't remember where and I definitely don't need or miss it. Just read your physical meter monthly, upload the readings to your current supplier and Roberts your Uncle.

  • I'm not bothered about the display, but the electric meter's awkward to read and they moved my gas meter into the garage (unsafe next to the electric meter for 50+ years they said).

DCC adoption of SMETS 1 meters is supposed to be on the next few months depending on which make of meter or is but its all gone very quiet.

It's unlikely any supplier will install SMETS 2 meters if you already have dumb meters SMETS 1 meters as they have agreed to wait for the adoption rather than needlessly change them.
