Hi, Wondering if someone can help.
I ordered some decking from a local builders supply. I ordered it online and paid by credit card. It was delivered yesterday, and I started fitting it. I got halfway across and realised I wasn't going to have enough. I checked my invoice received by email, and I had ordered 125mm wide boards, but what I had received were only 95mm wide, which obviously is not going to cover the area I had ordered and paid for. Should I contact them and ask for extra boards to cover the area I had originally ordered?

I assume 95mm boards are cheaper than 125mm? Did they charge for 95 or 125?

On the website they only list 125mm which is what I paid for. Also they were listed as double sided, but I received single sided, but I'm not too bothered about that. I'm just guessing they just supplied what they had in stock.0

Yes you should, although you really should've picked this up long before you started laying them down. How many boards did you order?Chimeria said:Hi, Wondering if someone can help.

Yes, I realise I should have checked before starting to lay them, but I just didn't think. I ordered 45 boards of 125mm for a width of 5625mm, I received 45 boards of 95mm giving a width of 4275mm. That leaves me 1350mm short, which is about 14 95mm boards short.0

Leaving aside the alleged width error of the planks sent to you, have you left no expansion gap between each board?Chimeria said: I ordered 45 boards of 125mm for a width of 5625mmSince 125 x 45 is exactly 5625 that would leave each board jammed up against the other, leading to the wood likely splitting in future and problems with drainage. You need to allow a consistent expansion gap of at least 5mm between each plank.Looks like you should lift and re-lay the boards before recalculating how many additional boards you will need to complete your project.0 -
You've assumed that the OP's stated width of 5625mm is the actual width to be covered (and not just the simple mathematical calculation) ... perhaps the OP is already aware of expansions gaps.

45 x 125mm boards = (44 x 130) + 125 = 5,845mm total width
To achieve that width with 95mm boards (assuming the same expansion gap) would require 58.5 (hence 59) boards of 95mm width.1 -
14.2 boards short by my calculation.Chimeria said:Yes, I realise I should have checked before starting to lay them, but I just didn't think. Indeed and if such is the case then he won't need to uplift the boards.DoaM said:perhaps the OP is already aware of expansions gaps.
However, given he only realised the boards were 30mm narrower than he purchased after fitting fully half of them, it's fair to assume he's a novice...0 -
Yes I have left expansion gaps, I was just simplifying the maths. No I am not a novice, just as thick as two short (decking) planks
