Hi, you can’t do much until completion date, but obviously when you have the keys you need to get in touch with the current energy providers (most people have the same provider for “dual fuel” but not always.)
You are in a deemed tariff from purchase date so it’s worth taking a meter reading and keeping photos from completion date when you go in for a look at your new home!
Call energy providers and get off the standard tariff, unless you’re planning a move and taking your current energy provider with you on move in date.
you might want to ask seller for details of current provider, but if the property was rented out, the seller might not know this.
With the house number and postcode you can search for the MPAN For electricity and MPRN for gas and these will also show the name of the current providers. More info about this here: https://www.comparethemarket.com/energy/content/mpan-number/1 -
DingerUK said:Call energy providers and get off the standard tariff, unless you’re planning a move and taking your current energy provider with you on move in date. You can't take your current provider with you, but you can switch back to your current provider after you've registered with the existing provider at your new address. So please do make sure that you always call the current provider, register with them and move onto the cheapest tariff without an exit fee and then start your switch...This site has many examples of people who thought this wasn't necessary and just registered with their old provider at the new address only to find out months later that they were still with the existing provider at the new address and had been on an expensive deemed tariff for months...Please do it the right way around to avoid expensive mistakes.1
